Ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD) are diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Treatment depends on the severity of the disease, site of inflammation, and patient’s response. The aim of this study was to develop a zero-order sustained-release tablet containing both the anti-inflammatory drugs mesalazine and budesonide as a new treatment option for ileo-colonic CD and UC. Tablets were attained by wet granulation with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and direct compression....

The purpose of this study is to characterize the properties of Eudragit® FS-based granules prepared using melt extrusion process for colonic drug delivery. 5-Aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA), theophylline, and diclofenac sodium were used as the model compounds. Drug and polymer blends were melt-extruded into thin rods using a single screw extruder. Drugs were found to be dispersed as crystalline particles in the granules. A hammer mill was used to reduce the extrudate into 16–40 mesh granules,...

A new design for nanocomposite hydrogels based on cross-linked chitosan for the delivery of mesalamine is presented. To enhance drug loading in chitosan, the mineral montmorillonite was incorporated into the matrix. The exfoliated silica montmorillonite nanosheets form interactions with both chitosan and mesalamine, which affect the hydrogel’s drug release mechanism and swelling properties. More
