Polymeric hydrogels are common dosage forms designed for the topical administration of antimicrobial drugs to treat vaginal infections. One of the major advantages of using chitosan in these formulations is related to the intrinsic and broad antimicrobial activity exerted on bacteria and fungi by this natural polymer. Most vaginal yeast infections are caused by the pathogenic fungus Candida albicans.

Aim Synthesis and evaluation of an entirely S-protected chitosan as mucoadhesive excipient for vaginal drug delivery. Methods N-acetyl-cysteine was linked to 6-mercaptonicotinamide via disulphide exchange reaction. The obtained ligand, NAC-6-MNA, was subsequently attached to chitosan by carbodiimide mediated amide bond formation in two concentrations. The synthesized S-protected chitosan was chemically characterized and mucoadhesive properties and stability against oxidation were investigated....

The aim of this work is the assessment of the eventual enhancing effects of Carbopol 971P NF on the performance of Benecel K4M as a controlled release agent and its impact on other technological properties such as compactibility and powder flowability. The effect of Carbopol 971P NF and Benecel K4M in the performance of metronidazole tablets with controlled release was assessed using dissolution and compactibility profiles and the flowability of powders. Benecel K4M produces release profiles...

The objective of this study was to develop a dry powder coating technique applied to colon targeting tablets containing metronidazole (MET) by using a pan coater. The coating formulation consisted of a polymer mixture (pectin/HPMC) and plasticizer (dibutyl phthalate). Dissolution rate of MET was conducted at pH 1.2, 7.4 and 6.8 in the presence of pectinolytic enzyme. The lag time release of MET was simultaneously controlled by enzyme signal in colonic medium and coating level. There was a...
