We discuss the typical split-plot and strip-plot complications in excipient compatibility studies. We explain that excipient compatibility studies are in fact mixture-process variable experiments. We present a flexible technology to set up highly informative experimental designs for excipient compatibility studies. We are the first to study I-optimal split-plot and strip-plot mixture-process variable designs We illustrate our approach using a real-life excipient compatibility study.
