Anionic polymers were modified with sulfhydryl bearing ligands to evaluate their mucoadhesiveness. • Mucoadhesion augmented up to 59.23-fold compared to corresponding unmodified polymer. • Tensile strength, bioadhesion, rotating cylinder and consolidation assay were performed on buccal tissue.
