Abstract In the human organism, the circadian regulation of carbohydrates metabolism is essential for the glucose homeostasis and energy balance. Unbalances in glucose and insulin tissue and blood levels have been linked to a variety of metabolic disorders such as obesity, meta- bolic syndrome, cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. Melatonin, the pineal hor- mone, is the key mediator molecule for the integration between the cyclic environment and the circadian distribution of...

Abstract The nasal absorption of macromolecules from powder formulations and the effect of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na) as a pharmaceutical excipient on their absorption were studied. Model macromolecules were fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled dextran (average molecular weight of 4.4kDa, FD4) and insulin. The plasma concentration of FD4 after application of the powder containing 50% starch (control) was higher than that after application of the solution, and the absorption from 50%...

Patients tend to prevent hypoglycemia by excessive saccharide intake leading to poorer glycemic control with potentially fatal consequences. This problem could be resolved by means of pellets with glucose release delayed by 120–360 min as a compensation of the antidiabetic drug peak effect. No glucose is released before; hence there is no risk of hyperglycemia and secondary complications. The pellets contain glucose in combination with an osmotically active ingredient and are coated with an...
