Co-processing is currently of interest in the generation of high-functionality excipients for tablet formulation. In the present study, comparative analysis of the powder and tableting properties of three co-processed starches prepared by three different methods was carried out. The co-processed excipients consisting of maize starch (90%), acacia gum (7.5%) and colloidal silicon dioxide (2.5%) were prepared by co-dispersion (SAS-CD), co-fusion (SAS-CF) and co-granulation (SAS-CG).

Abstract In this work, a bottom-up approach based on the study of polyelectrolyte interactions was performed in order to evaluate the effect of Prosopis alba exudate gum as novel excipient for fish oil encapsulation in composed calcium-alginate-chitosan beads. Emulsion and beads properties such as oil distribution, encapsulation efficiency, yield, microstructure and thermo-oxidative protection were evaluated. Alginate and gum exert a synergistic effect on emulsion stability properties, which...

Abstract: Background: Colorectal carcinoma is the fourth most common internal malignancy; it is second only to carcinoma of the lung as a cause of carcinoma death. 6-Mercaptopurine (6-MP) is a drug of choice in the treatment of Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and colorectal cancer. The drug shows irritation on gastric exposure. It has poor bioavailability with half life less than 2 h. Targeted delivery of 6-MP will provide an effective and safe therapy for colon diseases. Objective:...

Abstract In developing countries modern medicines are often beyond the affordability of the majority of the population. This is due to the reliance on expensive imported raw materials despite the abundance of natural resources which could provide an equivalent or even an improved function. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of sesamum gum (SG) extracted from the leaves of Sesamum radiatum (readily cultivated in sub-Saharan Africa) as a matrix former. Directly compressed...

Context: Sustained release drug delivery systems are more preferred than the conventional drug delivery systems due to its enhanced bioavailability and patient compliance. Earlier studies reported on glibenclamide (GBCM) were not clear and hence, the step has been taken to explore the sustained release drug delivery system of GBCM. Aims: To evaluate the sustained release microspheres obtained of GBCM. Methods: Microspheres were prepared by ionic gelation method using the polymers like Eudragit...

Abstract Diclofenac topical formulations are often preferred for drug administration to patients who experience serious GIT problems. Absorption of the drug through the skin, however, can be challenging due to the natural protective feature of the stratum corneum (SC). In this article, fluid gels prepared from gellan gum were explored as a topical drug delivery vehicle. Rheological analysis of the formulations showed that it was possible to produce a topical gel with a viscosity and the...

Abstract: Natural polymers, such as gums and mucilage, are biocompatible, cheap, easily available and non-toxic materials of native origin. These polymers are increasingly preferred over synthetic materials for industrial applications due to their intrinsic properties, as well as they are considered alternative sources of raw materials since they present characteristics of sustainability, biodegradability and biosafety. As definition, gums and mucilages are polysaccharides or complex...

Abstract The present study deals with the development of natural macromolecule gum Albizia stipulata (AS) based novel pharmaceutical excipient for the controlled-release of paracetamol (PC). Central composite design (CCD) two-factor, five-level was used for the optimization of independent variables AS gum and compression force (CF) based on desired response variable drug release (DR) of paracetamol matrix tablets (PCMT). The optimized PCMT was prepared by wet granulation method and screened for...

Abstract Cellulose triacetate (CTA) films were produced from cellulose extracted from sugarcane bagasse. The films were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), water vapor permeability (WVP), mechanical properties (MP), enzymatic digestion (ED), and mucoadhesive properties evaluation (MPE). WVP showed that more concentrated films have higher values; asymmetric films had higher values than symmetric films. MP showed that symmetric membranes are more resistant than asymmetric...

Aim: The aim of this work is development and evaluation of chlorhexidine medicated chewing gums by different methods and to study the influence of different plasticizers and methods on physicochemical parameters and in vitro drug release profile. Materials and Methods: Chlorhexidine is an antibacterial agent used for management of tooth decay. The formulations are prepared with varying concentrations of plasticizers and synthetic gum base by different methods such as direct compression and...
