The objective of this study was to assess the acceptability and swallowability of several minitablets when administered as a unit dose compared with an equivalent dose of syrup in children aged 6 months to 5 years. Study design The acceptability and swallowability of multiple drug-free minitablets in comparison with glucose syrup was assessed in 372 children of 2 age groups (186 in age group 1 [6-23 months of age] and 186 in age group 2 [2-5 years of age]) in a randomized, 3-way, single...

Abstract Neonates administered ethanol-containing medicines are potentially at risk of dose-dependent injury through exposure to ethanol and its metabolite, acetaldehyde. Here, we determine blood ethanol and acetaldehyde concentrations in 49 preterm infants (median birth weight = 1190 g) dosed with iron or furosemide, medicines that contain different amounts of ethanol, and in 11 control group infants (median birth weight = 1920 g) who were not on any medications. Median ethanol concentrations...

Current treatment for adrenal insufficiency in neonates and infants is unsatisfactory as unlicensed adult formulations are used and the minimum unit dose available is a scored 5mg hydrocortisone tablet. These are difficult to administer to neonates and give rise to inconsistencies in dose as content uniformity of crushed tablets cannot be verified. We have developed a new formulation, Infacort®, specifically designed for infants and neonates… more...
