Orally disintegrating tablets and oral lyophilisates are novel attractive dosage forms that disintegrate or dissolve in the buccal cavity within seconds without necessity of drinking. The major limitation in designing of these dosage forms is unpleasant taste of the drug substance. Cetirizine dihydrochloride is a H1-antihistamine substance indicated for the treatment of allergy.

The main objective of this novel study was to develop chlorpheniramine maleate orally disintegrating films (ODF) using hot-melt extrusion technology and evaluate the characteristics of the formulation using in vitro and in vivo methods.

The multiparticulate drug product concept covering micropellets, pellets and mini-tablets is presented as a highly feasible approach to present convenient and patient friendly medication for the geriatric population. Improved swallowability and optimized administration regimen going along with defined drug dosage are achievable. Extemporaneous preparation of medicines from standard medication can be avoided going along with improved patient safety.

The importance of providing safe and effective delayed- and extended-release oral formulations that can replace products requiring multiple administrations has been continually cited as an area in need of improvement for pharmaceutical companies. Such controlled release challenges become especially critical when they must be adapted for paediatrics, those suffering from dysphagia, or patients with specific dosage administration limitations. More often than not, lack of palatability and...

Abstract Context: Considering that bitter taste of drugs incorporated in orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs) can be the main reason for avoiding drug therapy, it is of the utmost importance to achieve successful taste-masking. The evaluation of taste-masking effectiveness is still a major challenge. Objective: The objective of this study was to mask bitter taste of the selected model drugs by drug particle coating with Eudragit® E PO, as well as to evaluate taste-masking effectiveness of...

Abstract Nowadays electronic tongues are used for the recognition of variety of samples, but most popular application area is pharmaceutical analysis, including mainly taste masking effects detection and estimation. However, it is noticeable, that among various pharmaceutical formulations still simple masking with the use of sweeteners plays the key role in such investigation. In this work we conduce electronic tongue study of novel drug delivery system − microspheres containing cetirizine....

Abstract Solvent-free hot-melt coating processing is a novel and cost-efficient approach to manufacturing taste-masked multiparticulate systems. However, most API powders are fine and cohesive and not processable by hot-melt coating. The aim of this study was to produce dense and abrasion-resistant granules with high drug content ( > 80%) via roller compaction for hot-melt coating process optimization. The selected API was ibuprofen sodium dihydrate, a salt of ibuprofen with improved...

Taste-masking granules were prepared by coating granules with a taste-masking layer prepared by combining the water-insoluble and -soluble polymers, ethylcellulose and hypromellose, respectively. These granules showed an immediate drug release property after a suitable lag time. We confirmed that the dissolution behavior depended on the polymer ratio in the taste-masking layer. The result showed that the dissolution lag time and rate of the taste-masking granules were shortened and enhanced,...

More than 50 percent of people (young and old) have difficulties with the use of tablets and capsules. Difficulty swallowing, psychological barriers against such formats or taste aversions make it hard for the patients to take the prescribed medication reliably. This is why tablets are crushed, dissolved or otherwise altered. Mostly with the result that active ingredients are lost and the dosing quantity is no longer accurate. XStraw® enables the simple and intuitive intake of the exact dosing...
